Do you know about our Singapore story? Our history and how water plays an important part in our life?
Did you know that 50 years ago, we were faced with drought, floods, water pollution in our rivers and water shortages. We had to depend on our neighbouring countries for the import of water supply.
There were 4 agreements signed between Singapore and Malaysia to regulate the supply of water from Malaysia to Singapore
- 1927 Agreement (no longer in force) – signed on 5th December 1927
- 1961 Agreement (Tebrau and Scudai Rivers Water Agreement) signed on 2nd October 1961 (but took effect on 1st September 1961)
- 1962 Agreement (Johor River Water Agreement) signed on 29th September 1962 (valid for 99 years (ie. till 2061)
- 1990 Agreement signed on 24th November 1990 to supplement the 1962 pact and will also expire in 2061
Today, our water supply comes from the “Four National Taps”
- Local Catchment Water
- Imported Water
- Highly purified reclaimed water (NEWater)
- Desalinated Water
You can read more about it from “The Singapore Water Story” article from PUB website here.
