iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Specs Comparison

iPhone5 VS Samsung Galaxy NOTE2

Both the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 have been unveiled recently. With rumours (with leaks, specs and photos) that have been going on prior to their announcements, and almost everything mentioned in the rumours and fan-sites came true.

Pre-Registration for the iPhone 5 (running iOS6) in Singapore have already begun, where you can show your interest and get updates from the 3 major Telcos in Singapore. And it should arrive at our stores starting 21st September 2012.

There is no announcement for the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 yet, but it is expected to hit the streets in October 2012, and it come with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)!

Here’s the iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Specs comparison – two devices that is high up on almost every smart phone lovers’ wishlist:

Screen Size And Form Factor

The iPhone 5 was announced to be the thinnest of its series, at 7.6mm in thickness, 123.8mm tall and 58.8mm wide, weighing 112g. Screen size is 4inch with a resolution of 1136 x 640 px at 326 PPI Pixel Density. It utilises the IPS LCD Retina display and 16:9 Aspect Ratio.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is 9.4mm thick, 151mm tall and 80.5mm wide, weighing 180g, boosting a screen size of 5.5inch with a resolution of 1280×720 px at 267 PPI Pixel Density. Aspect ration is also at 16:9 and it uses an HD Super-AMOLED display and interaction with the screen is also possible with the S-Pen Stylus that comes with the Note 2.

Although smaller in screen size, the iPhone 5 can still be handled with one hand easily. But in some instances, the selling point of the Galaxy Note 2 might be it’s large screen size; thus one of the disappointment of the iPhone 5 was the screen size ~although right from the beginning, leaked photos already showed the iPhone 5 to be only 4inch, but fans expected more!

Why Do We Want A Big Screen

For folks who are “not-too-young” or have poor eyesight, a larger screen of great importance. However, most of us Asians might not have large hands or palms, thus one-hand operation with Samsung’s Phablet, the Note 2, might proof to be a bit of a challenge especially when we are standing on a bus.

But then again, if we are not-too-young-with-poor-eye-sights, chances of youngsters giving up their seats on a crowded bus (or MRT) to us is high, in our friendly Singapore environment, so the Samsung Note 2 might still be a big welcome !! 🙂

Updated : 24th September 2012

I managed to try out the new iPhone 5. It is really very light, and fits nicely in one hand. But the disappointment is still the screen size. Although it’s larger (longer) than the iPhone 4/4S, it is not wider 🙁

Processor And Storage Capacity

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 uses the same Quad Core Processor as the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Exynos 4412, clocking at 1.6Ghz (Samsung S3 runs at 1.4Ghz). The Note 2 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB internal storage variants, with a microSD slot for up to additional 64GB of memory, and 2GB of RAM (double that of the S3)

The iPhone 5 uses the Dual Core A6 CPU Chip which boasts a 2x faster performance compared to the previous A5 chips. The iPhone 5 will also come in 3 variations, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, but there is no microSD slot for “memory upgrades”

Although the Note 2 have the option to expand the storage memory with microSD cards, it is known that running apps (and music/videos/other medias) from internal memory is usually slightly faster and more responsive than to run them off external cards. But, having the option to expand storage space is always a welcome to some too. So, this option is really a matter of personal preferences.

Battery Life

Talk time on the iPhone 5 is up to 8hrs and 225hrs for Standby Time, while there is no reported usage time of the Note 2 yet, it boasts a removable battery with a capacity of 3100mAH !!

Camera And Audio

Both the iPhone 5 and Note 2 have a 8 Megapixel rear camera, but the Note 2’s front camera is 1.9 Megapixel while iPhone 5’s is 1.2 Megapixel.

The iPhone 5’s Camera App have a panorama function that can stitch together the shots for you to create a 28 Megapixel high-resolution panorama image!

The iPhone 5 have 3 microphones (front, back, and bottom) and provides noise-canceling function to reduce background noise. It also comes with the new earphones, the EarPods with Remote and Mic.

Cellular, Wireless And Connectors

The iPhone 5 that we will be using in our region should be the GSM model A1429, and it supports UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5); Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n; 802.11n on 2.4GHz and 5GHz); Bluetooth 4.0; GPS and GLONASS

The Note 2 supports 3G: HSPA+21Mbps; (HSDPA 21Mbps / HSUPA 5.76Mbps); 4G LTE: 100Mbps / 50Mbps; Bluetooth v 4.0 (Apt-X Codec support) LE; USB 2.0 Host; WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 & 5 GHz), Wi-Fi HT40; Wi-Fi Direct; NFC; S Beaml A-GPS and GLONASS

iPhone 5 uses the Nano SIM card whereas the Galaxy NOTE 2 uses the Micro SIM.

Do note also that the iPhone 5 uses a new connector, the 8 pin Lightning connector. You can still connect your current accesories to the iPhone 5 by using a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter.

Price

The iPhone 5, without mobile phone contract, is selling for about the same price as when the iPhone 4S was introduced; S$948 for 16GB; S$1088 for 32GB; S$1238 for 64GB

There is no price information for the Note 2 yet, but it is rumoured to cost more than the Samsung Galaxy Note when it was first introduced.

Conclusion

Both devices have their own unique strengths and this two new devices might be a close fight (in terms of market dominance), but many users are leaning towards the Note 2, partly because of a bigger screen.

As mentioned above, a bigger screen is a real advantage to some. However, some like it, some don’t..

What’s your preference?
