iOS 6 Experience ~ First Look

iOS 6 Update

iOS 6 Is Finally Out!

The new iOS6 was available as a FREE download since last night, either OTA (Over The Air) via WIFI from your eligible iOS devices or via iTunes®. The file size is about 599Mb.
(Eligible Devices includes the iPhone® 3GS and later, iPod Touch® that are 4th Generation and newer, and the 2nd and 3rd Generation iPad®)

Important Note!

No Google Maps™ And No YouTube™

If you need the Street View™ from the previous Map App (Google Maps) on your iOS devices, do note that iOS 6 is using the new Map App from Apple®, and we don’t get Street Views for our local Singapore Maps (yet?).
You can check out alternate Map Apps as an add-on if you want.

Do note that YouTube is also missing from the default apps in iOS 6. However, fret not, because you can still download the YouTube App from App Store℠, for your all your YouTube viewing needs on your iPhone 🙂

iOS 6 First Look ~ What We Like

Other than the features listed in my previous article on What’s New in iOS 6, here are some useful features that I would like to highlight :

iOS 6 Accessibility

Now if you’ve turned on AssistiveTouch from the Accessibility Settings, whenever you take a screenshot, you don’t get that circlular AssistiveTouch onscreen “button” in your images anymore.

IF your Home Button works, you could take a screenshot by pressing the Power and Home button simultaneously. Now, you can also take a screenshot with AssistiveTouch. If you scroll to the next menu page by pressing the “More” option, you can see the function to take a ScreenShot with the onscreen button now!

And while you’re at this, you might also be glad that you can now check switch to the running Apps by pressing the “Multitasking” onscreen button, to switch between open Apps that were running in the background. If your Home Button works, you could do it by pressing the Home Button Twice (unless you’ve programmed Double Click on the Home button to perform other functions)

You can also activate Voice Control from the first screen of the AssistiveTouch menu!

Some of us use the AssistiveTouch as an iPhone Home Button Replacement because our Home button is spoilt or not responsive, and our iPhone warranty is over (or it works out to be too costly to get it repaired)

Find out how you Fix” your iPhone Home Button with AssistiveTouch from our previous article here.

Do Not Disturb!

Another big welcome is the Do Not Disturb function. Almost similar to the Airplane mode, or when you turn off your phone completely when you do not want to be disturbed by incoming calls or notifications ie. when you are sleeping, or when you are in a series of important meetings, etc.. EXCEPT, with this function, you can still choose to receive calls from contacts in your “Favourite” lists or a group you define yourself, and you can schedule your iOS 6 device to go into Do Not Disturb mode at a preset timing you choose.

iOS 6 Do Not Disturb

You can activate the Do Not Disturb function from the Settings main page, and you get a crescent moon icon on the top of your menu bar if the mode is activated.

iOS 6 Do Not Disturb Settings

Set your Do Not Disturb scheduled timing from the Notifications page.

While you are in this mode, you can still have the option to receive calls from contacts in your “Favourites” category or from a Group you define yourself. You can define the group with a connected iCloud Contact account, or you can set the group from your connected Address Book App from your desktop.

There’s also an option to let a call pass through if the caller calls again within 3 minutes from the same detected phone number (Provided there is Caller ID and it is enabled).

One good use of this function is to filter out unsolicited Telemarketers calls during a certain period of time (defined by the Schedule), while allowing calls from the Group “All Contacts“; Only thing is, you might miss out calls from people not from your contact list during this period unless they redial your number again within 3 minutes. (Then again, the persistent Telemarketer might redial again too.. )

Anyways, this is a very useful function that can be put to good creative use!

Can’t Talk Right Now…

iOS 6 Reply With Message

This is another useful feature. If you are in the midst of something, and you receive a call, you can set your iPhone to reply with a customised message, to ask the caller to call back later, or to leave an SMS, etc or you can choose to let get reminders about the missed incoming call too!

There are more than 200 new features added in this iOS 6 update. Other than the missing Google Maps and YouTube App (both can be easily replaced by alternate downloads from the App Store), I think this FREE upgrade is good enough to keep us occupied and have a taste of what the new iPhone 5 might bring us.

So go ahead, check out the new iOS 6 update for your elligible iOS device now!
